Justin Roiland, the lead actor and co-creator/mastermind behind ‘Rick and Morty’, has been charged with felony domestic violence and false imprisonment.

A protective order is concealing many details of the case from the public; however, the charges are known to relate to a 2020 incident in which Roiland is accused of violent conduct against Jane Doe, his partner at the time.

Roiland was originally charged in May 2020 and released on a $50,000 bond in August. The case was then arraigned in October of that year, where Roiland entered a plea of not guilty. That same month, Jane Doe filed for a protective order against Roiland, meaning that he is forbidden from coming within 100 feet of her.

Roiland appeared in court again today for a pre-trial hearing and he is due for another on April 27, although a trial date is yet to be set. It comes as ‘Rick and Morty’ Season 6 finished airing in December 2022 and the series continues to be one of the most popular adult comedies, with the franchise worth around $1 billion. It will be interesting to see how the news affects the reception of the show, with some fans already vowing to stop watching.
