The Beach Hotel is back baby.

Many of us Novocastrians will have fond memories of the Beach Hotel in Merewether. Sitting at tables in the outdoor area, overlooking Merewether Beach, while sipping on a bev, is one of those things that every person from Newy has done at some point. Now, the place has finally gotten the makeover that its stunning location deserves, breaking free from its old pub shackles and lifting it into the 21st century. And it’s finally re-opening today!

Hotelier Glenn Piper, inspired by the sun, salt, and vibrant community spirit that defines Merewether, has meticulously renovated this iconic pub to pay homage to its decades of history and heritage. The result is a revitalised main bar, a sun-soaked terrace, and a brand-new coastal dining experience named Peregrin.

The journey of transformation began with Larrie’s, a retro takeaway reminiscent of classic Australian milk bars, opening earlier this year. Now, The Beach Hotel’s main bar and upstairs restaurant are following suit, creating a timeless space that seamlessly blends familiarity with freshness.

Glenn Piper, who spent his summers surfing Merewether’s coastline, expressed his excitement, stating, “The Beach Hotel has always been so much more than a pub; it has been a gathering place for friends and families across Newcastle and the surrounding areas for generations.”

The restoration, led by local design practice EJE Interiors, has brought forth the richness of The Beach Hotel’s history. The main bar reflects the elegant curves of seaside topography, incorporating metal touches to honour Newcastle’s steel city legacy. Original elements, including a heritage saloon bar and tile floors, have been rejuvenated, showcasing decades of memories and graffiti.

Executive Chef Adam Rust introduces a menu that merges the old with the new, featuring reimagined pub classics and flame-grilled fare with a quintessentially Australian coastal twist. Diners can savor delights such as Potato Scallops with vinegar sea salt, homemade Sausage Rolls with chipotle ketchup, and Snapper Ceviche with cassava chips.

The drinks list embraces Merewether’s laidback beach philosophy with signature cocktails like the Sea Swell and the Lychee Longboard. The bar also offers a dedicated margarita menu alongside crisp local beers and Hunter wines.

Take a look at the renovations below and follow them on IG here. We’ll catch you there on the balcony tonight!
