Another day, another true blue Aussie news story. This one involves some of our nation’s favourite tropes: Steve Irwin and filthy cash money.
Police are warning business owners to be extra vigilant after fake $100 bills were stolen from a film set in Alice Springs. The notes reportedly look very much like the real thing, aside from the (significant) fact that they feature Steve Irwin and Alf from Home And Away, instead of Sir John Monash and Dame Nellie Melba.
A few other key alterations include the pictures of the Australian Masked Owl and Native wattle being replaced by a mining haul truck, the Shrine of Remembrance being booted for a picture of singer John Farnham (~you’re the voice~) and the fact that the word ‘Australia’ has been shortened simply to ‘Straylia’ (a worthy improvement, IMO).
It seems the notes in question may have been designed by Melbourne Artist Aaron Tyler who previously mocked up a series of fresh Australian note designs featuring prominent national icons including the likes of Corey Worthington, Dame Edna and Vegemite.
Police have provided images of the stolen $100 notes, although it’s reported that similar $10, $20 and $50 bills might’ve also been nabbed.
Authorities are now encouraging everyone to take “a quick glance” at any notes received, so BE ALERT and if you do happen to notice Steve Irwin’s mug poking out of your wallet…it’s, obviously, not the real thing.
