Fine dining meets cannibalism…

Swedish food manufacturer Oumpf! has shared details of their human flesh-tasting burger patty. The makers of the entirely vegan burger – which was created to simulate the flavour of human flesh – sought to prove that plant-based patties can resemble any meat, evidently skipping beef and leaning straight into cannibal territory.

Despite its eye-popping flavour simulation, the burger was tasty enough to win second place at this year’s Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, which apparently included a judging panel of straight-up zombies. Speaking of the burger to The New York Post, Oumph! Anders Linden insisted that “no humans were injured in the development of this product.”

“This is our ultimate and weird way of showing that it’s possible to create any type of food by using just plants,” Linden said.

Referencing the burger’s ingredients, Linden went on the list soy protein, mushrooms, wheat protein, plant-based fats and what he calls “secret” herbs and spices (code for ‘if I tell you, I’ll have to kill and eat you). Given its award-winning flavour profile, one must wonder exactly what the taste-tester’s point of reference was, a question which Oumpf! replied to on their Instagram page.  “We have conducted countless hours of research to understand what texture and taste we wanted,” the company wrote.

Before you descend into a rabbit-hole of what exactly “research” entails, enjoy this behind-the-scenes footage of Oumpf! employees making their human burger.
