In a move that’s equal parts heartbreaking and unaustralian, Waverley College in Sydney has banned students from turning up with mullet hairstyles, stating that students with the iconic do won’t be allowed on school property.
Despite the fact that the mullet has been normalised as of late and is rocked by countless celebs around the world (think Miley, Rihanna, literally every Riverboy off Home & Away), it seems the school isn’t having it, with deputy principal Patrick Brennan saying “The ‘mullet’ haircut trending at present is not acceptable and students will be directed to the local barber or their preferred hair stylist to rectify any issues.
A spokesperson for the school had similar sentiments, stating that “while personal expression, fun and creativity are important parts of who we all are as individuals, it needs to fit within the bounds of what is acceptable and required of us. Student hairstyles fit within this principle,
It seems the war on the mullet has ben going on in Aussie schools for some time now, with Brighton Grammar in Victoria last month as well as a Perth school last year issuing a ban on the haircut, with the latter going so far as sending home a letter to parents, which stated “Some year 8 boys recently presenting with a hairstyle that resembles a mullet. Please note that this is seen as an extreme hairstyle and not in keeping with the personal presentation of a Mater Dei student.
“If your son currently has this style, please ensure this is rectified by the start of term.”
