Sydney Sweeney has nabbed the iconic role previously played by Jane Fonda.

Euphoria sweetheart Sydney Sweeney has landed the role of Barbarella in a remake of the cult sci-fi flick of the same name by Sony Pictures. Based on a comic book series by French author, Jean-Claude Forest, the original 1968 movie starred 60s film icon, Jane Fonda, in a role that the New York Times described as “the most iconic sex goddess of the 60s”. While it wasn’t an immediate hit at the box office, over time the movie and its titular character became cult classic material.

The film followed Barbarella, an astronaut from the 41st century, in her attempts to stop the scientist Durand Durand from using his evil Positronic Ray on the galaxy, either fighting or sleeping with almost everyone along the way. The film’s excessive use of sex (the opening credits alone feature Barbarella undressing in zero gravity) earned it the description of an “outrageous, space sex comedy” from FlickFeast who claimed “it could never be made now.” Apparently, they’ve been proved wrong.

Even still, it will be interesting to see how the remake delivers a Sydney Sweeney-imagined Barbarella into the 21st century. While the movie is still in the early stages of development, insiders suggest that Sweeney is likely to executive produce.
