Some expensive bones…

How much would you pay for a piece of ancient, pre-historic history? Let’s pretend you had an unlimited wallet and could spend however much you desired. But regardless of whatever amount you had, we guarantee you wouldn’t spend as much as this buyer, who snapped up a t-rex skeleton at a recent auction for $31,847,500 USD (around $42 million AUD).

Measuring 13 feet high and 40 feet wide, the piece is one of the few completely assembled skeletons of its kind. It was initially expected to go for $6 to $8 million USD ($8 to $11 million AUD), but old mate was feeling extra generous on the day of the auction, and decided to break a couple of records as a result.

The auction house, Christies, actually named the T-Rex “Stan”, which is the most cooked name for a T-Rex. But it’s actually got a bit of sentimental meaning, named after amateur palaeontologist Stan Sacrison who discovered the skeleton in 1987. It’s made up of 188 original bones and was found at Hell Creek Formation (between South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana).

It was described as “one of the best specimens ever discovered,” according to Christies Science & Natural History department, and it’s got a brand new home. Here’s hoping Stan enjoys his new digs.
