It’s Oscar nomination time again, and as we edge towards the 95th annual Academy Award ceremony (taking place on March 13), as always, the list of nominees contains a healthy dose of snubs and surprises.
Leading the way with a huge 11 nominations is A24’s sci-fi action adventure Everything Everywhere All at Once, followed closely by The Banshees of Inisherin and All Quiet on the Western Front, which both collected a substantial 9 nominations.

He was given nothing, was meant to achieve nothing.
Today – aged 30 – BARRY KEOGHAN was nominated for an Oscar.

One of the most surprising snubs in this year’s nominations was the absence of any female director, with the nominations for Best Director going to the likes of Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans), Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin).
The Oscars should have a split “Best Director” category for male and female.
It’s horrible to see no women on the list, while all the current nominations are rightfully deserved.— Rareș Barbu (@rab_xyz) January 24, 2023
Meanwhile, despite Top Gun: Maverick becoming the sixth highest-grossing movie in American box office history, Tom Cruise has missed out on (a likely expected) nomination for Best Actor (although the film still garnered six nominations including Best Picture, Visual Effects and Writing).
the Oscars nominating both the ultimate anti-war movie with the ultimate military propaganda movie for Best Picture is insanely funny pic.twitter.com/BLIDg2gIlJ

Marvel Universe’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was also omitted when it came to Best Picture nominations, while Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Woman King missed out on a nod for Lead Actress for Viola Davis’ performance. Luca Guadagnino’s Timothée Chalamet-starring Bones and All also failed to collect any nominations.
Gina Prince-Bythewood did an amazing job directing The Woman King. It was an awesome movie. And most importantly she understands lighting. Even night scenes were legible. The Oscars shut out for her, Viola Davis, and Lashana Lynch is really frustrating.

Meanwhile, on a positive note, Everything Everywhere All at Once‘s Michelle Yeoh broke the history books by becoming the first Asian woman to be nominated for Actress in a Leading Role in 88 years.

Elsewhere, Paul Mescal (of Normal People fame) has officially secured his first Oscar nomination for Actor in a Leading Role for the A24 film, Aftersun.

Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale, which received a six-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival, also gained a nomination for Best Actor for Brendan Fraser’s performance, making it Fraser’s very first Oscar nomination, more than thirty years after his first acting role.
