Marcus McGowan, 51, was snorkelling at a Queensland luxury resort off Haggerstone Island near Cape York when something bit him from behind. The Haggerstone Island Resort describes itself as a “family-owned, exclusive luxury resort” and the entire island can be hired out for $7,600 AUD a night (crocodiles and all).
“I thought it was a shark but when I reached up, I realised it was a crocodile. I was able to lever its jaws open just far enough to get my head out,” he described in a statement.

Apparently, the crocodile tried to come back for another nibble, but he was able to push it away, although not before suffering a bite to his hand.
Speaking on the incident, Queensland’s environment department said crocodiles in the open ocean “can be difficult to locate as the animals often travel tens of kilometres per day”.

Crocodiles are pretty common in Australia’s tropical north, and there have been multiple attacks in recent history, including one in February of this year, where a man was attacked and his dog eaten on a boat ramp north of Cairns. In another attack this month, the remains of a 65-year-old fisherman were found inside a 4.1m crocodile on Kennedy River.
Stay safe out there.
