What a legend…

One of Mushroom Group founder Michael Gudinski’s last in-depth interviews aired on Foxtel Arts last night, and it’s safe to say it was riveting to say the least. Taped in 2018 with journalist Mike Munro, the sit-down saw Gudinski reflect on his crazy and impactful life, and saw him make some slightly eerie statements about death and his future.

Opening up like never before, the Aussie music icon said “I’ve had a pretty lucky life and a lot of good fun. I think too many Australians don’t realise what we have got here. I’ll never forget before the old man passed, and he said to me: ‘Never go to the old country [Russia]’, and I never have, and I hear it’s beautiful; that’s not the point.

“I think there’s so many people of my generation that came out here and put their foot on the ground and brought their children up, and I’m lucky enough to have a couple of healthy good kids and one of them is going to take the mantle hopefully, and ah, you can’t rule from the grave.”

This prompted Munro to chime in “And look after his old man!” to which Gudinski responded “Well I think it will be a while,” then adding in a goose-bumping fashion “I said I will not be beaten in my lifetime, but I hope you can beat me son, after I’m gone.”

Pretty impactful words from a man that did so much for the Aussie music industry. From founding Mushroom Group in 1972 to helming Frontier Touring and putting countless local artists on the map, the man did more for Aussie music than any before him.

You can catch the encore of his 2018 interview on Fox Showcase tonight at 8:30pm. But before then, be sure to tune into the livestream for his state funeral, which is set to take place in Melbourne today at 7pm.
