If there was ever a time to start a gondola business…

In another instance of climate change ruining all of our favourite things, it seems that The Big Apple, New York City, is now sinking into the ocean at an alarming rate.

Comparable to that of the floating city of Vence, the US capital is now submerging at an estimated 1 to 2 mm per year, as according to Business Insider. And although climate change and rising sea levels are no doubt contributing to the city’s eventual demise, it turns out its weight is at fault as well, with its 8.5 million person population and endless skyscrapers adding gravitational pressure on the land.

It sounds like a pretty comical problem, but it’s set to majorly cook things up for New Yorkers should said sinking continue, with the coastal regions in NYC being especially vulnerable with the added risk of hurricanes. The whole ordeal has a real Day After Tomorrow vibe to it which, if you’ve seen the film, isn’t exactly the most feel-good flick about the biggest city in the world.

Still, at least it might be a kick up the ass for the US elite to start reducing the world’s impact on the environment. For now, we’d highly recommend booking a flight to see the Big Apple while you still can, and if you happen to be living in NYC, be sure to get in early on the gondola train.
